Senseless vandalism testing patience of Wallsend community

SHARE

The residents have certainly had enough.

And, Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery is fed up, too.

A third senseless act of vehicular vandalism on the playing surface of Federal Park in the space of two months continues to test the patience of those within the community.

Now, the local member’s calling for it to end once and for all, after the sporting fraternity surveyed further damage to its fields last week.

The damage at Federal Park last week.

Ms Hornery recently wrote to Newcastle City Police District Commander Superintendent Kylie Endemi, urging her to commit additional patrols in the area at nights, while stating she would support any efforts by City of Newcastle (CN) to adopt a proactive approach to prevent more destruction.

She also praised the resilience of Fletcher FC, who continually faces the setbacks.

“The last time this happened to Federal Park, everyone came together and laid down topsoil to repair the damage,” Ms Hornery said.

“But, our community should not have to tolerate these despicable acts of crime.

“Vandalism of this nature is not just a minor annoyance.

“Sporting teams are impacted and it affects their ability to play on these surfaces.

“I have been impressed with the police response so far, however I encourage them to commit more resources to patrol around our community facilities.

“I’ve no doubt they’ll take steps to stamp out these criminal acts.”

Ms Hornery suggested CN could erect fencing, barriers or CCTV cameras to help protect the community assets.

“The residents need more support,” she added.

“And, I will always fight for it.

“However, I’m particularly keen to see additional CCTV installed in our city both as a preventative and an investigative tool.

“But, if anyone knows who these suspects are, or has any details about the incident, phone CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

“Only your valuable information will lead to the apprehension of these people.”
