Residents invited to have their say on Broadmeadow’s future

SHARE

Local residents are expected to have their say on the transformation of Broadmeadow over the next two decades.

Although planning is still in the early stages, City of Newcastle (CN) has already started consultation with the community about several ideas and feedback.

There will also be a range of opportunities for people to offer their opinions, and learn about the project first-hand, as it develops over the ensuing 12 months, including information drop-in sessions at Hamilton Library (46 James Street, Hamilton) on Wednesday 31 May (10am-1pm) and Saturday 3 June (1pm-4pm); and council’s Digital Library (12 Stewart Avenue, Newcastle) on Wednesday 7 June (4pm-7pm).

It’s understood CN is leading the development of the Broadmeadow Place Strategy, in partnership with the NSW Government.

However, a new approach is being taken, where council will lead the work to develop the policy and play an integral role in the strategic planning for the suburb.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said she welcomed the chance to work alongside the NSW Government to deliver long-term outcomes for the community and rezone land to support 2,000 additional homes.

“We know our population is growing,” she explained.

“And, Broadmeadow provides a unique opportunity to deliver housing, job opportunities and public spaces and facilities right in the heart of the Newcastle LGA.”

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said a partnership between the NSW Government and council would deliver the best result for the community.

“We will work together to develop plans to transform Broadmeadow into a vibrant and connected area, with an abundance of housing, public spaces, and job opportunities,” he added.

“The Broadmeadow Place Strategy will inform detailed master planning for the precinct.

“So, I encourage everyone to be part of the planning process and help shape the suburb’s future.”

Those who live, work and play in Broadmeadow are urged to help guide the change moving forward.

“We want to better understand the precinct’s opportunities from the community’s perspective,” Cr Nelmes said.

“Working with residents, and considering advice from the technical experts, we will plan for Broadmeadow’s future and create a new and enhanced place for people to live in and visit for years to come.”

The public is invited to provide feedback via a short survey available on City of Newcastle’s website: https://haveyoursay.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/broadmeadow-place-strategy.
