Mary’s popping into Newcastle to celebrate milestone production

If you’re looking for A Spoonful of Sugar to sweeten the kids during the October school holidays, here’s the perfect treat.

The stage production of Mary Poppins will fly into Newcastle’s Civic Theatre later this year to celebrate the film’s 60th anniversary.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time, which was released in 1964 starring Julie Andrews (Sound of Music) and Dick Van Dyke (Diagnosis Murder), has been capturing hearts and dazzling millions of people all over the world in a whole new way: as a hit Broadway musical.

Mary Poppins opened to critical acclaim and commercial success, earning $44 million in its original run.

It became the highest-grossing film of 1964 in the United States and, during its lifetime, has garnered more than $103 million worldwide.

On top of that, it received a total of 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won five categories: Best Actress for Andrews, Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Song.

The spectacular and unforgettable new theatrical production is brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the original big screen blockbuster.

Featuring timeless favourites Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Chim Chim Cher-ee, Feed the Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, join the Banks family as they discover the undeniable magic of childhood and a spellbinding world of infinite possibilities where anything can happen… if you let it.

Newcastle now has the chance to experience the enchanting mixture of an irresistible storyline, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stagecraft that makes this the musical that soars high above the rest.

Mary Poppins opens at the Civic Theatre on 5 October, continuing though until 17 October.

Tickets are on sale, so don’t miss out.
