What’s On: Seven things to do in the Hunter this weekend

SHARE

It’s the last weekend of August.

If you’d planned to get out-and-about before spring kicks in, this is your last chance.

We’ve decided to join you in your to-do list this week; let’s do this, let’s get busy, let’s go..

Let’s Get Physical:

In honour of Olivia Newton-John, Fondalicious are hosting their monthly retro aerobics class onboard the MV Steve Irwin, a retired Sea Shepherd boat.

After a tour of the flagship vessel at 3pm on Saturday, attendees will meet on the deck and grapevine their way through the afternoon until 4.30pm.

When the class is complete, all are welcome to kick-on at the Carrington Bowls Club, with all money raised at the event being donated to the Olivia Newtown-John Cancer Research Institute and Ship4Good – a non-profit providing ocean conservation education.

Let’s Get Arty:

The Hunter Arts Network is hosting its Art Bazaar at Lambton Park this Sunday.

From 10am to 3pm more than 40 carefully selected stallholders will showcase their unique artisan wares, all handmade in the Hunter, including pottery, photography, sculpture and paintings.

Visitors will also be treated to food trucks and coffee, as well as live performances by local entertainers.

After 20 years of the popular Art Bazaar, organisers of the event are urging the community to support local makers by purchasing one-of-a-kind treasures on sale this weekend.

Let’s Fix It:

The Repair Cafe is back on Saturday from 10am to 1pm at the Warners Bay Theatre.

Dedicated volunteers will be on hand to fix any broken items that are simply too good to waste.

Household items including clothes, hand tools, small electrical items or small furniture, can be brought in for repair, free of charge.

Coffee, tea and light refreshments will also be available.

Maitland street eats

Let’s Eat:

Street Eats will be held in Aberglasslyn this Saturday from 5pm to 8pm.

A collection of mobile food trucks will provide the meal, while local entertainers will provide three hours of live music at the Golden Whistler Park.

Let’s Learn:

Maitland Gaol will be hosting an Ex-Warder Guided Day Tour from 11am to 12.30pm on Sunday.

Visitors can explore the site with someone who knew it best in this 90-minute guided tour.

With more than 20 years’ experience working in the John Street address, stories will include the perspective of famous and infamous characters from yesterday and yesteryear.

Your guide will provide you with information on the history of this maximum-security facility and what it was like to look after some of the ‘worst of the worst’.

Be prepared for some harrowing tales.

Bookings Essential, not recommended for children under the age of 14 years.

Let’s Read:

Join Lake Macquarie author and adventurer Jared Styan at the Wallsend Library on Saturday from 12noon as he recounts his 13-hour run for charity up a volcano in Peru and hear how it inspired his new children’s picture book.

Jared will host an author reading, activities and refreshments for young adventurers as well as the opportunity to purchase the book.

The Boy Who Ran up a Volcano is a heart-warming story based on true events that is set to inspire young children, teachers, and parents alike to be more courageous and explore the wonderful world around them.

Bookings for the one-hour event are essential.

Let’s Buy It:

Handmade in the Hunter Markets are on this Saturday from 9am to 2pm at Sobels Wines.

The popular Pokolbin event is the wine region’s only 100% handmade market, with each and every item for sale proudly locally handmade.

It is also the longest-running, meet-the-maker market in the vineyards, allowing buyers to meet and talk with the grower, maker, or artist behind each creation.
