It had the usual sixth birthday party inclusions – bubbles, food and music, but The Creator Incubator soiree on Saturday night had a much wider appeal.
The Hamilton North address that has become the creative space for 38 local artists was abuzz with activity.
Crowds wandered through the Clyde Street site between 4pm and 8pm to help celebrate six years since the art gallery-come-studio-come-drinks garden first opened its doors to the public.
Visitors of all ages were greeted with refreshments and a joyful welcome, before being encouraged to meet the artists behind some of their favourite artworks.
Everything from ceramics, acrylics, prints, photography, statues, and jewellery are showcased at the warehouse-style space each day, only this night it was adorned in garden lights and to the backdrop of music and the smell of tempting curries.
Set underneath an almost full moon, the expansive space that looks like an explosion of colour, shone with enthusiasm, the carpark and bike stands filled with curious newcomers and faithful supporters.
Such is this space – for the newcomer it resembles a maze, with hidden nooks appearing at every turn, but joyfully every nook is a feast for the eyes.
And, at its birthday party, everyone was welcome to roam each and every one of those nooks, which they appeared to do with a smile.
The event organisers’ only complaint was an ill-timed global event.
“We are all a bit upset that the newly-crowned King Charles decided to get coronated on this day, I do think he should have been more considerate,” joked The Creator Incubator’s Kara Wood.
