For the first time, a locally-based marine adventure-tourism company will offer whale-watching off Lake Macquarie.
CoastXP is launching its new vessel, Hydro, in readiness for the season, which peaks around the end of June and throughout July.
With regular departures from Swansea, in addition to daily trips from Honeysuckle, guests have an opportunity to experience the joy of viewing humpbacks up close from two different locations.

“The whale-watching season is always an exciting time,” CoastXP founder Dominic May said.
“But, it’ll be even better for Newcastle and Lake Macquarie locals.
“It’s expected that approximately 35,000 humpback whales will pass our coastline in the coming months, many with calves in tow as they complete the 10,000-kilometre round-trip from Antarctica to Tropical North Queensland and back.
“Now, Lake Macquarie can join in on the fun.
“Hear stories about the coastline, maritime history, Aboriginal heritage and learn about the marine life and geology that surrounds our beautiful region.
“The highlights of these experiences include viewing humpback whales engaging in a variety of surface behaviours, from slapping their tail or pectoral fins on the water to launching their whole bodies out of the water in a full breach.
“On CoastXP’s offshore tours, there is always the added chance of encountering other marine life such common or bottlenose dolphins, long-nosed fur seals and an array of migratory sea birds.”
Hydro is based in Lake Macquarie full-time and accommodates 12 guests, complimenting the company’s flagship vessel, Atmos, which seats 20 people.
CoastXP’s Whale Encounter Tours begin in late May and will depart daily, weather and sea conditions permitting, from Honeysuckle Foreshore.
Whale Discovery Tours set sail every weekend, as well as throughout school holidays, from Chalmers Street Jetty in Swansea.
