Clarendon Hotel, Frederick Ash Building to undergo multi-million-dollar redevelopment

A prominent location in the heart of Newcastle’s CBD is set to undergo a multi-million-dollar makeover if given the go-ahead.

New plans for the Clarendon Hotel and heritage-listed warehouse Frederick Ash Building were lodged with City of Newcastle (CN) this week.

The Stevens Group intends to redevelop both premises, along with the nearby Bennett Building.

It’s understood the amalgamated site will have access directly through to Wheeler Place and the Newcastle Civic Theatre.

“The application, if approved by council, will lead to a full renovation of the existing Clarendon Hotel with a new lobby, cocktail bars and lounges on the ground level for guests and patrons as well as 22 state-of-the-art rooms,” a Stevens Group spokesperson said.

“The centrepiece of the plan is for a three-level atrium above the existing courtyard, complete with an operable roof to create an oasis in the middle of the city.

“Heritage items have been high on the agenda, too.

“There are plans to retain the existing structures, which were built in the 1930s, ensuring the preservation of the charm of the buildings.

“The Clarendon Hotel’s design will retain its art deco public bar to Hunter Street as well.

“This new lease on life, and its central position, will result in it becoming one of Newcastle’s finest entertainment and boutique hotel venues.”

Meanwhile, the existing ceilings and fireplaces in the Frederick Ash Building, which was added to the New South Wales Heritage Register on 2 April 1999, will be retained, providing a sense of the premises’ original legacy.
