Historic Merewether family home sale a rare offering

If you close your eyes tight enough, you can almost hear the sounds that have filled this Merewether home since it was built in 1861.

Children’s laughter, babies crying, the call to dinner, the service of guests.

They’re all the noises of yesteryear ingrained in the wood that supports the grand staircase, the open fireplaces and the hardwood floorboards of this historic Newcastle homestead.

“The Ridge” as its known sits at the heart of a 2,223 sq/m parcel of land, perched high above the coveted beachside suburb that bears its forefathers’ name.

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom home was built by Edward and Augusta Merewether for their family.

Tucked away within its own cul-de-sac, the now heritage-listed property continues to be adored as a valued member of the family.

From the cottage garden, stately verandah, and three-car garage with a six-person attic home office, to its grand stained-glass window filled front door, floor-to-ceiling fireplaces, and pitched gable roofing.

So, 21 Hillcrest Road was built to stand the test of time.

It is also accustomed to successfully hosting all manner of occasions, from children’s playdates, Christmas luncheons, business meetings and even weddings.

From 1954 to 1977, the home became the Hillcrest Maternity Hospital, a sanctuary for birthing mothers and their babies, owned by the Salvation Army.

In the early 80s, after it had been empty for a few years, a Newcastle family saved the structure from demolition, before undertaking a two-year restoration that breathed new life into the grand old dame.

The pair of creatives were committed to lovingly restoring all of its original features.

From its delightful garden and living fishpond, to its double-storey cubby house that stands whimsically on the fringes of the expansive lawns.

Even the one-bedroom cottage that was the former matron’s quarters has been refreshed and can offer the owners short-stay earning potential.

The home is seeking a new family, only the third in its 160 year history, to create new memories into the next millennium.

It is on the market for between $10 – $12 million.
