Mother’s Day ethical gifts – a ‘Compassion’-ate idea

SHARE

You may have walked past it on your way to Kmart.

It sits in the middle of the mall on level 2 at Westfield Kotara.

It won’t be there for long, but this small pop-up shop is on a big mission – to help feed some of the 719 million people around the world that are living in poverty.

The colourful stand is stocked with Mother’s Day cards that sit alongside the gift of chickens, baby essentials and food security items.

It is a gift given from one mother to another.

Compassion will be at Westfield Kotara until May 14.

Compassion Australia CEO Clare Steele says choosing a Gift of Compassion for mothers living in poverty, or expectant mothers, can literally change a life.

“Many of the gifts on offer can transform a family’s financial situation—including the ability to purchase a chicken, which helps ensure children have a steady source of protein, plus plenty of eggs to sell,” she said.

“Other gifts include: a Baby Essentials Kit, which will help a brand-new mum by giving her dignity and practical support; a start of life bundle which provides an expectant mum with the crucial ante and postnatal care she needs for a safe delivery and a food security gift that ensures families in poverty are provided with sustainable sources of food”.

The impact of these gifts, reiterates Ms Steel, is very tangible.

“Motherhood is a beautiful season, but it can sometimes also be frightening,” she explained.

“For mothers living in poverty, the crucial support they and their baby need to thrive is often missing.”

The Gift of Compassion pop-up stall will be set up at Westfield Kotara until 14 May.
