Due to continuing wet weather and forecasts of more to come, this weekend’s Firelight has been cancelled.
The decision to cancel was made after significant consideration and in keeping with Singleton Council’s number one priority to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community.
Several performers and vendors had also raised concerns about the weather.
Singleton mayor Sue Moore said it was a disappointing decision, but the safety of the thousands of attendees came first.
“Firelight is one of our most popular community events, and there’s been so much work and planning gone into making this year yet another success,” she explained.
“But, the inclement weather conditions, and forecast for more, means that we’re left with no other option than to cancel in the interests of keeping everyone safe.
“Having said that, it doesn’t make this decision any less agonising.
“We sincerely apologise for the disappointment this will cause and appreciate your understanding.”
PREVIOUS: Singleton will turn up the heat again this weekend when its annual festival of flame Firelight returns to the town centre.
A packed program of vibrant performances, music, magic, food and fun is scheduled on Saturday 4 May.
And, it all kicks off from 5.30pm.
The swanky tunes of the Cyan Groove Band, roving puppets and an immersive light-up sensory space are new additions to the free, family-friendly event.
They’ll join LED roving performers, a neon mural and, of course, some of the region’s best food stalls, food trucks and a laneway bar.
To make sure there’s plenty on offer for everyone, there’ll also be a fairy floss tent, face painting, balloon twisters and a jumping castle.
“Firelight is one of our most popular community events and no wonder,” Singleton mayor Sue Moore said.
“It’s a great way to bring in a festival atmosphere and encourage people to experience John Street and the surrounding lanes in a whole different way.
“Strolling around at night among fire performers, lights, music and a vast variety of food and drink.
“We put a lot of work into creating a sensory delight for everyone, from toddlers to teenagers with activities, music and interactive performances.
“In keeping with the theme for the night, I warmly invite residents and visitors to enjoy all that’s on offer.”
Road closures will be in place on Saturday 4 May from 1pm until approximately 11pm at:
- John Street between York Street and Pitt Street
- Burns Lane between John Street and the entrance road to the Ampol petrol station located off Burns Lane
- Pitt Street between John Street and Laurel Lane
- Castlereagh Street between John Street and Laurel Lane
- The two council car parks to the east of Burns Lane
