Hunter’s radio stars shine at ACRAs

SHARE

The Hunter Valley’s voices on the airwaves were heard loud and clear at the 33rd annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) at the weekend.

While the hugely-popular Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson claimed the spoils as the Best On-Air Team – Metro FM in the country for The Kyle & Jackie O Show, the local brigade fared extremely well, too.

Triple M 102.9 Newcastle’s morning pairing of Tanya Wilks and Steve Grahame, of Tanya & Steve fame, were presented Best On-Air Team – Provincial, while stable mates Jeremy Ryan took out Best Sports Presenter – Provincial and Isabel Everett captured Best Newcomer On-Air – Provincial.

Another much-loved trio – Jess Farchione, Nick Gill and Nick Allen-Ducat from Hit 106.9 Newcastle – also made a mark with its peers.

Their Newcastle’s Biggest Whirlpool campaign, along with Taylah Smith, Claudia Mason and Alex Ryan, was deemed the Best Station Promotion.

Gill then picked up the Best Station Produced Comedy Segment with his Get Vaccinated skit.

For good measure, Power 98.1 Muswellbrook’s Dana Hamilton walked away with the Best Entertainer Presenter plaudit in a country area.

The ACRAS’ gala event, hosted by WSFM’s Jonesy & Amanda at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, was attended by 1,000 radio personalities and executives from around the country on Saturday night, with Birds of Tokyo, First Nations singer-songwriter Mitch Tambo and hip hop artist ILLY providing the entertainment.

Sandilands and Henderson were inducted into the Hall of Fame as well, with the KIIS 1065 breakfast duo winning the main award a record eight times.

“The ACRAS showcase Australia’s vibrant radio and audio industry, recognising outstanding talent across 39 categories, including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment,” CRA chief executive Ford Ennals said.

“They’re about celebrating what makes radio such an enduring and influential medium.

“It has been 99 years since the first station began broadcasting in Australia – and radio’s bond with listeners today is stronger than ever.

“Congratulations to all the winners.”
