A critical incident investigation has been launched after a woman was injured in a fall, in Newcastle, at the weekend.
About 6.20am on Sunday 5 February, police were called to The Esplanade.
It followed reports a female was precariously situated on a balcony.
Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended and attempted to communicate with the 45-year-old before she fell.
The woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A crime scene was then established.
Now, a critical incident team from Lake Macquarie Police District is investigating the circumstances surrounding the episode.
That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
