Two men will appear before court after being charged in relation to an alleged carjacking in Maitland earlier this month.

About 12.45pm on Tuesday 12 September, police were called to an aquatic centre on Les Darcy Drive.

On arrival, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were told two females, aged in their 60s, were approached by two males before they fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to the women.

Officers then started an investigation into the incident.

Police will allege in court the vehicle was located, destroyed by fire near Singleton, later that night.

Following inquiries, a 25-year-old man was arrested at a home on Barton Avenue, Singleton, on Wednesday 13 September.

The Raymond Terrace resident was taken to Singleton Police Station where he was charged with aggravated steal from the person, steal from the person value greater than $15000, damage property by fire/explosives, and use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

He was refused bail to appear before Singleton Local Court on Thursday 14 September, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 8 November.

Subsequently, after further inquiries, a 47-year-old was arrested at Maitland Police Station about 3pm on Tuesday 26 September.

The Rutherford man was charged with two counts of steal from the person value over $15,000.

He was refused bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday 27 September.
