With the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) predicting a scorching summer, and bushfire threats, a major hazard reduction operation took place to protect homes at Cameron Park.
More than 40 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters, in four pumper appliances and six water tankers, worked with NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) volunteers and Lake Macquarie City Council staff at the weekend to reduce built up fuel in 38 hectares of bushland.
The area adjoins hundreds of homes in the popular suburb, as well as a network of transmission lines.
The NSW RFS used a helicopter to drop incendiary devices to safely ignite the bush while an FRNSW Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) or drone flew overhead to monitor the burn’s progress.
“We have a hazard reduction responsibility for areas where the bush meets the urban interface,” a FRNSW spokesperson explained.
“Further burns are planned this week, including an operation at Lindfield on Sydney’s upper north shore on Tuesday 26 September.”
