LGA: Newcastle
Once the converging point of trains travelling to and from Newcastle’s coal mines, today The Junction is a melting pot of cafes, shops, clubs, bars, restaurants and services.
Small in footprint, the popular suburb takes up just 0.3km2, with parklands making up 4% of its total size.
Once part of Merewether, it became its own suburb in 1991, just two years after the Newcastle earthquake all but destroyed the suburb’s 117-year-old primary school.
It now sits perched between Merewether, Newcastle West and Hamilton.
Unlike most suburbs in the former steel city, the population of The Junction has declined in recent years, dwindling from 1,485 in 2011 to just over 1,000 in 2016.
Suburb snapshot:
In the past 12 months seven properties have sold in The Junction, with nine currently listed for sale.
There’s a total of 682 residences in the popular suburb.
“It’s a highly sought after place to live,” says Dalton Partners real estate agent Andrew McGavin.
“I’ve been selling homes in The Junction for over 20 years and have witnessed many changes during that time.
“A very basic shopping village in the 1990s, it’s now become an exclusive centre with a village atmosphere. The number of cafes, restaurants and boutique shops has increased dramatically.
“Two surfwear stores, Dougheads Donuts and The Hood Milkbar are just a few examples of new and interesting businesses that have been established recently.”
Its homes, he says, are a mix of traditional and modern, with many older homes being demolished and rebuilt, or replaced by new townhouses.
