A Waratah man was refused bail to appear at Belmont Local Court following a pursuit with police at Lake Macquarie this week.

About 6.45pm on Wednesday 22 March, officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District were patrolling the Windale area.

While there, they saw a Suzuki motorcycle travelling on South Street, disobey the red traffic control at the intersection of Lake Street.

The bike – reportedly stolen from Wollombi in the Hunter region – failed to stop when directed and a pursuit was initiated, travelling along the Pacific Highway before being terminated at Bennetts Green.

With the assistance of PolAir, police monitored the motorcycle as it travelled to Charlestown where it collided with a vehicle before the rider abandoned the bike on Kirkdale Drive.

Following a foot pursuit, the rider, a 39-year-old man, was arrested following a short struggle.

He was taken to hospital for treatment before being escorted to Belmont Police Station on Thursday 23 March, where he was charged with drive conveyance taken w/o consent of owner, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, not give particulars to other driver, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

He’ll appear before a magistrate on Friday 24 March.
