Mayoral Scholarship program supporting Cessnock students

Time is running out for youngsters to apply for Cessnock City Council’s 2024 Mayoral Scholarship program.

Students who reside in the LGA, and are currently studying at university or TAFE, have until Sunday 21 April to lodge a submission.

Each scholarship is valued at $2,500 and can be used at the recipient’s discretion to support their studies.

“The program’s something I’m truly proud of,” Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal said.

“This initiative aims to support local pupils to advance their education.

“So, I’d love to see as many residents as possible achieve their career aspirations.

“Students can often find it difficult to manage work and study commitments… receiving this extra assistance can take some pressure off and enable them to focus on their studies.”

A former recipient, Georgia Bailey, agreed.

“Being awarded the Mayoral Scholarship in 2022 provided me with support while undertaking a double degree at the University of Newcastle,” she said.

“It empowered me.

“It instilled confidence in my career path and enabled me to reach new goals in my life that I never thought possible.”

Since 2002, with the help of local sponsors, the Mayoral Scholarship has rewarded 246 pupils to the value of $615,500.

As well, council is looking to expand the program.

It’s now calling on local businesses to come on board as a sponsor.

Enterprises contribute $2,500 per scholarship, with the total amount being awarded to successful candidates to help offset costs such as course fees, textbooks, laptops and more.

“The program is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to support the upskilling and growth of our workforce,” Cr Suvaal said.

“So, it would be fantastic to see more scholarships offered to our students.”
