She’s been described as having “the finest vocals in Australian music” by The Border Mail, while Rolling Stone called her “Indie-pop for adults… smart, challenging and mature pop music”.

Now, almost 150 Hunter students have been left spellbound by pop princess Kate Miller-Heidke.

The youngsters, representing the Hunter School of Performing Arts (HSPA), Hunter Singers, Lambton High and Merewether High, joined forces with the vocalist, who’s tasted chart success with multi-platinum hits Last Day On Earth and Caught In The Crowd.

The award-winning singer-songwriter performed with a choir of 1,000 public school pupils, including those from the region, in two shows at the Sydney Town Hall on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 May.

The In Concert series, presented by the NSW Department of Education, featured Miller-Heidke singing her original songs alongside the students, including Zero Gravity, the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest showstopper.

The choir and music ensembles also performed classics by Mozart, Gustav Holst and Carl Orff, as well as contemporary tunes.

The department’s director of arts, sports and initiatives Jordi Austin said In Concert brought together secondary pupils from 100 schools to present choral works that display “the power of the voice as a musical instrument”.

“The combined choir offers every student the opportunity to engage with authentic and challenging repertoire and perform alongside Kate Miller-Heidke, one of Australia’s most successful artists,” she stated.

The concerts also showcase senior groups from the NSW Public Schools’ instrumental and vocal ensembles.

In Concert is an annual series for NSW public school pupils coordinated by the Department of Education’s Arts Unit, providing a unique chance for them and their teachers to celebrate and enhance their music education in a world-class performing experience.

Each year, the Arts Unit directly delivers programs and events to 64,000 students and 8,600 educators, with almost 600,000 additional pupils benefiting from its resources.
