Everyone has the right to feel safe at Christmas

SHARE

Holidays are meant to be filled with joy and festivities but, for some, it’s not.

So, it is crucial to recognise that not everyone experiences this time of year with the same sense of celebration.

While for many it’s a time for reflection, festivity and gathering with family and friends, for others, it can be fraught with fear.

As identified by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN), December and January have proven to be the busiest times for specialist family violence support services.

The data surrounding calls to these services and law enforcement shows a significant spike during the holiday season.

It’s during these times that vulnerable individuals may face heightened risks, making it imperative for primary health care professionals (and family and friends) to be vigilant.

If you suspect that a person may be experiencing domestic, family, and/or sexual violence, it is crucial to spot the signs.

Physical injuries, symptoms of depression or anxiety, a sense of fear, low self-esteem, and being tracked, monitored, or isolated are potential indicators.

If you spot the signs and you have concerns, start the conversation.

You could ask “is there anything going on at home that could be affecting your health?” or “Christmas can be a stressful time and it can be common for partners to fight, is this happening in your relationship?”.

Having a conversation about domestic family violence doesn’t have to be hard… and it can be lifesaving.

Listen without judgment, validate their feelings, and refer to Local LINK for support – a primary care dedicated one-stop referral pathway for specialist support.

In cases where there is immediate risk, phone the police on Triple 000.

By remaining vigilant and proactive during the holiday season, we can all contribute to a safer and more secure community.
