Cocaine washes up on beaches between Newcastle and Sydney

SHARE

In extraordinary circumstances at the weekend, seven packages – suspected to contain cocaine – have washed up on beaches between Newcastle and Sydney.

It’s believed the barnacle-covered bundles first surfaced at Magenta Beach on the Central Coast, followed by further reports of similar incidents occurring at Blacksmiths Beach at Swansea, Avoca and Manly.

A member of the public found the original parcel about 8pm on Friday 22 December.

They then reported their discovery to Tuggerah Lakes Police District.

Local officers removed the item, which was sent for further examination and testing.

Police have now been told presumptive analysis indicates the package contains cocaine.

A crime scene was established with officers from Northern Region Operational Support Group assisting with a wide-ranging search of the area on Saturday 23 December.

A further three bricks were also located.

Officers attached to coastal stations conducted further searches on Sunday 24 December, with parcels uncovered at Manly, Avoca and Blacksmiths beaches.

All have been sent for further examination.

Investigators are now urging anyone who may have seen packages, similar to that depicted in the photograph – with barnacles covering the outer plastic wrapping – to contact local authorities.

Police are keen to warn the public against removing or opening any of the bundles and, if found, to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Officers are working closely with Surf Life Saving NSW as beaches continue to be searched, too.

As inquiries continue, anyone who may have information which could assist investigators is encouraged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
