Fans of Captain Shane “Scarecrow” Schofield and Jonathan “Jack” James West Jr are in for a treat when their creator Matthew Reilly heads to the Hunter.

The best-selling Australian author, with worldwide sales of more than eight million copies, will be a special guest at the Newcastle Writers Festival on Wednesday 25 October.

He’ll speak about his latest novel, the epic historical thriller Mr Einstein’s Secretary.

Best-selling author Matthew Reilly.

Festival director Rosemarie Milsom said it was a coup to welcome Reilly, now based in Los Angeles, back to Newcastle.

“I’m thrilled he has included the city in his national tour,” she stated.

“Matthew last visited Newcastle seven years ago.

“He has an enormous and dedicated readership.

“And, he engages people who may not consider themselves avid readers… and that is invaluable.

“More than 300 attended our 2016 event and I have no doubt his October visit will be just as popular.”

Mr Einstein’s Secretary spans 40 years and centres on Hanna Fischer who dreams of studying physics under the great Albert Einstein.

But as a teenager in 1919, her life is suddenly turned upside-down.

She’s catapulted into a new and extraordinary life – as a secretary, scientist, sister and spy.

From racist gangs in Berlin to gangsters in New York City, Nazis in the 1930s and Hitler’s inner circle during World War II, Hanna encounters some of history’s greatest minds and most terrible moments, all while desperately trying to stay alive.

In other words, it’s a typical Reilly tome.

He’s the internationally-bestselling author of the Scarecrow and Jack West series, and numerous standalone novels.

His books are published in more than 20 languages.

Recently, he directed the Netflix film Interceptor, which he co-wrote with Stuart Beattie.

The 25 October event, in the Shortland Building at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus, starts at 7pm.

ABC Newcastle presenter Dan Cox will host the hour-long conversation and Reilly will sign copies of his new book afterwards.

Cox co-hosts Breakfast on ABC Newcastle with Jenny Marchant from 5.30am to 9am each weekday.

Tickets are $35 and can be booked at https://www.newcastlewritersfestival.org.au/matthew-reilly-event/
