His array of hits, such as Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Band on the Run, Silly Love Songs – to name just a handful, are legendary.
And, now, music icon Sir Paul McCartney is heading to Newcastle in 2023.
The Beatles’ main man will rock out McDonald Jones Stadium with his Got Back tour on Tuesday 24 October.
He’ll follow in the footsteps of Sir Elton John and Pink at the Hunter’s premier venue.
An 18-time Grammy Award winner, two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, McCartney is one of the most successful and famous musicians of all time.
For the past six decades, as a solo artist and as a member of The Beatles, The Quarrymen and Wings, he has released the most No. 1 hits of all time.
Venues NSW CEO Kerrie Mather admitted it had been a transformational year for McDonald Jones Stadium.
“Venues NSW has worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months to ensure Newcastle becomes a regular stop on any artist’s world tour,” she said.
“Following record-breaking Sir Elton John concerts earlier this year, we are delighted to have partnered with Frontier Touring and the City of Newcastle (CN) to secure global superstar Paul McCartney.
“He is an icon of world music – he’s produced more hits than anyone else on the planet and he’ll be performing them in Newcastle.”
To assist Venues NSW in its quest to continue securing new and exciting major events, a two-year partnership extension has been struck with the CN.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle continued to shine as a thriving major events destination attracting significant national and international acts.
“We are thrilled to be able to welcome Paul McCartney to our city in October for what will be a night to remember for thousands of appreciative Novocastrians and tourists,” she added.
“On the back of two unforgettable performances by Sir Elton John and ahead of next year’s sold-out Pink concert, Newcastle has truly become a must stop destination for promoters looking for a world-class city to include on their national concert tour schedule.
“This is just another fantastic outcome of City of Newcastle’s ongoing partnership with Venues NSW, which will inject millions of dollars into the local economy and provide an important boost for our tourism and hospitality sectors.”
Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said major events were a great driver of inbound tourism.
“They are a terrific drawcard to bring interstate tourists to Newcastle,” he explained.
“So, we’re proud to help support those events through direct flights from 12 destinations to make it easier for people to get here.
“More generally major events raise the profile of the region, nationally and globally.
“Once people have experienced what we have to offer, we know they’ll come and visit again.
“As we upgrade the terminal, striving to deliver the airport the region deserves, major events will be a key component in driving demand for more flights and more routes, which means more visitors and a greater economic boost for the Hunter.”
