$100m investment in Hunter’s green hydrogen future

SHARE

The Australian Government is delivering on its commitment to position Newcastle, and the region, as a green hydrogen hub.

And, a $100 million investment will ensure Labor’s vision takes shape at the Port of Newcastle (PoN), for the benefit of the greater Hunter.

The funding is expected to support a feasibility study, detailed designs and vital early works to guarantee PoN is ready for the production and distribution of green hydrogen.

The government’s latest outlay follows on from previous financial obligations to back renewable careers, including $16 million to establish a New Energy Skills Hub at the University of Newcastle; $100 million to assist 10,000 New Energy Apprenticeships; $10 million towards a New Energy Skills Program for Australia to be able to seize the jobs opportunity to boost local skills and training in new industries; and the Powering Australia plan, which will see five-out-of-six new positions in regions such as the Hunter.

“The Port of Newcastle is the largest coal export hub in the world,” Shortland MP Pat Conroy said.

“This investment will enable it to become a key player in the emerging global green hydrogen economy.

“With our skilled workforce, abundant resources, industrial expertise, rail and port infrastructure, our region is poised to take full advantage of new industries.

“The government knows the Hunter can be a clean energy and hydrogen superpower.

“Hydrogen produced from renewable energy is the way of the future.

“So, I’m proud to be part of a government delivering for the region and providing the chances to create new secure jobs and grow our economy.”

Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon admitted it was an obvious step moving forward, given Newcastle had powered Australia for generations.

“We’re now ensuring it will continue to do so for many, many years to come,” she said.

“Green hydrogen is an important part of the diversification of the Port of Newcastle and integral to the shaping of our region’s future.

“This project and the development of a clean energy industry at PoN will create thousands of jobs, while crucially diversifying our local economy.”

Upper Hunter MP Dan Repacholi added the multi-million-dollar investment would also position the region as a national leader.

“The Hunter has been the powerhouse of the NSW energy and export market for well over a century,” he said.

“By ensuring the Port of Newcastle is hydrogen-ready, it will set us up to remain that way for centuries to come.”
