Two charged following police pursuit through Newcastle

A man and woman have been charged with numerous offences following a police pursuit through the streets of Newcastle on Thursday night.

About 11.20pm on 27 April, officers from Newcastle City Police District were patrolling Newcastle Road, Jesmond, when they attempted to stop a station wagon for the purpose of a random breath test (RBT).

The driver failed to obey the direction, which initiated a pursuit towards Kotara South.

There, road spikes were successfully deployed, deflating the tyres.

A 36-year-old man and 29-year-old woman were arrested at the scene and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

The male was charged with five counts of possess prohibited drug, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

The female was charged with possess prohibited drug, possess prescribed restricted substance, and breach of bail.

Both were refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Friday 28 April.
