Big wet affecting Hunter roads

SHARE

While locally-based NSW SES crews are being kept busy, due to the current deluge, several roads throughout the Hunter have been impacted, too.

It comes after more than 100mm of rain descended upon the region at the weekend, with the promise of further showers for the remainder of the week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

Several streets throughout the LGAs of Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Singleton remain closed on Monday 6 May.

“It’s important people drive to the conditions to keep everyone safe,” an NSW SES spokesperson said.

“Please take care and remain vigilant around waterways and on our roads.

“I know we often sound like a broken record… but motorists should not drive through floodwaters.

“What looks like a relatively shallow and steady flow of water across the road, at the time, might result in dire consequences.

“Flooding can erode road and path surfaces leaving potholes, sinkholes and other dangers.”
