REAL NRL: Fifita has ‘unfinished business’ at The Entrance Tigers

Powerful prop David Fifita admits he has some “unfinished business” in Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL).

The former NRL and English Super League star was a key signing for The Entrance Tigers in 2023, however his stint was cut short due to a couple of personal matters, which needed addressing.

But, the front-rower appreciated the Central Coast club’s understanding and compassion to the situation so much that he felt compelled to repay co-coaches Jamy Forbes and Ben O’Connell.

“I was always coming back to do an extra season,” Fifita said.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best timing to leave the Tigers mid-year but I had to help out the family, as well as some people at Wakefield Trinity in the UK.

“Thankfully, The Entrance officials were very sympathetic.

“In fact, they were great and fully-supportive of me going back to England.

“That’s why I felt I had to return here and give them the full season they deserve.

“So, for me, it’s a little bit of unfinished business in possibly my last year.

“Plus, I got some boys to come back with me, which is pretty cool.”

The twin brother of ex-Australian player, Andrew, took the field for the Cronulla Sharks on 19 occasions before embarking on a stellar career with Trintiy, which netted more than 140 appearances.

Fifita’s retention, and the addition of Blake Austin, Irish international Brendan O’Hagan and Tony Pellow, who spent 2023 with the Cessnock Goannas, will give Tigers’ supporters plenty to roar about.

“It was a slow start to the pre-season because a lot of guys play other sports,” he said.

“However, it’s all falling into place now… the big names, or who we call the ‘superstars’, are making their presence felt.

“So, there’s a good feeling and vibe around the club at the moment.”

Adding to the buoyant mood was The Entrance’s maiden berth in the play-offs last year.

The Tigers eliminated the Wyong Roos first-up before falling victim to the Goannas a week later.

“At full-strength, we showed we were more than capable of matching it with the other sides,” Fifita told the Newcastle Weekly.

“Honestly, I thought we boasted the most damaging forward pack [in the Real NRL] in my eyes.

“Now, we have the best core, too, with O’Hagan, Austin and Pellow.

“So, all the signs are promising.

“Brendan’s been involved with NRL clubs Canberra Raiders and Wests Tigers in the past.

“Then, for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the 2023 Queensland Cup, he recorded 11 try assists, forced 11 drop-outs and ran a total of 952 metres from 15 games.

“Tony’s also an impressive footballer, with speed to burn.

“They’re great signings, so we’re looking forward to the season.”

Fifita said he’s most excited about seeing Austin don the boots for The Entrance.

An Australian Schoolboy, the 32-year-old enjoyed success at the Penrith Panthers (2011-13), Wests (2014) and Canberra (2015-18) before linking up with the Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos.

“Blake has a ton of experience… and class,” he added.

“The Tigers have a lot of promising juniors coming through at the club, including several halves, so they’ll be looking up to a bloke like him.

“He won’t only be an asset for Central Coast and Newcastle rugby league, but for the entire community.

“It’s important for guys, who have played at the top level, to pass on any knowledge to the youngsters.

“You don’t want to keep it to yourself.

“I know you’ve got to have some footy in your blood, however it’s always good to give back and, hopefully, you can change some kids’ lives.”
