In tragic circumstances overnight, a 26-year-old man has died following a motorcycle crash near Maitland.
About 12.30am on Saturday 16 December, emergency services were called Haussman Drive, Thornton.
It followed reports of a serious accident in the area.
On arrival, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established the rider of the Yamaha motorcycle lost control after failing to negotiate a bend before he was ejected and struck a tree.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man.
But, sadly, he died at the scene.
A crime scene was established, which has been forensically examined.
An investigation is now underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
