Driver charged after fatal Fennell Bay hit and run

A Wangi Wangi man is scheduled to appear before court today following a hit and run, which caused the death of a motorcyclist in Lake Macquarie.

It’s claimed the 33-year-old was the driver of a Mitsubishi Triton utility that ran a red light, about 10pm on Thursday 1 December, at the intersection of Macquarie and Main roads, Fennell Bay.

He then struck an unsuspecting motorcyclist.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District rendered first aid to the 49-year-old rider until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

However, the Maryville man was unable to be revived.

The driver of the ute allegedly ran from the scene before stealing another vehicle.

But, he was arrested a short time later.

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing and to be treated for minor injuries.

Upon his release about 2pm, he was conveyed to Newcastle Police Station and charged with nine offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death; negligent driving occasioning death; drive manner dangerous; fail to stop and assist; disqualified driving; take and drive conveyance (two counts); proceed through red light; and enter dwelling with intent.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Saturday 3 December.
