Council calls for tenders to revitalise Awaba House

Lake Macquarie City Council will seek to retain key heritage elements of the iconic Awaba House in a rebuild now out for tender.

Manager property business development Elizabeth Lambert said tenders were open for the key project at Booragul, aimed at revitalising the site badly damaged by fire in 2019.

“We’re looking forward to working with the successful contractor to restore Awaba House to its former glory, and welcome dining and events back to the revitalised space,” she said.

“It’s important that we respect and retain the building’s heritage elements, while reinvigorating the space for a diverse and contemporary offering to the community.”

Fire caused extensive damage to the site at Awaba House in 2019.

Following community engagement in 2020, council has developed plans to restore key features of the building, while breathing new life into the much-loved site with a restaurant and function space.

Construction is expected to begin later this year and be complete by late 2024.

Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser said the restoration would provide a vibrant and unique destination, attracting both locals and visitors to the shores of the lake.

“Our community has been longing for Awaba House to be rebuilt following the 2019 fire, so I’m pleased to see the project take a major step forward,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing it once again become a beautiful landmark and a drawcard for our city.”
