Berno caps a weekend to remember for Northstars

It was a weekend to remember for Newcastle Northstars young gun Daniel Berno as the side enjoyed interstate success on the road.

The 23-year-old claimed hat-tricks in both matches against the Brisbane Lightning in the double-header exhibition series at the Boondall Ice Arena.

Not to be outdone, the Canadian also scored the winning goal on Saturday night, securing the victory, 5-4, for the visitors with only 22 seconds remaining on the clock.

Playing in front of a capacity Queensland crowd, the combatants produced their best hockey over the two days, leaving all the fans on the edge of their seats to the final buzzers.

In the opener on 25 June, the Northstars and Lightning left the first period locked at 1-all, courtesy of Berno and Thomas Kiliwnik (Brisbane).

The hosts then gained the advantage at the end of the second, thanks to Will Clifford and Dylan Kendrick, to lead 3-2.

Berno again placed his name on the scoresheet.

Patrick Nadin and Dash Quartarolo put Newcastle ahead 4-3 before Brisbane’s Lachlan Clifford levelled in all up, 4-all.

When a draw appeared the likely result, Berno supplied the magical touch to steal the win in the dying moments.

On Sunday, 26 June, each team lifted its intensity, much to the delight of the spectators.

However, an entertaining first period could not split the rivals either, going into the break 3-all.

Richie Tesarik, David Jeremy and Mackenzie Gallagher posted goals for the Northstars, while Brisbane’s Eamon McKay, Lachlan Clifford and Arum Rapchuk found space around the goalmouth.

A double to Berno in the second period gave Newcastle a slight advantage at 5-4, despite a strong reply from Rapchuk to keep the Lightning in the fixture.

Another goal to Berno, as well as Francis Drolet, which was cancelled out by Sean Savage, allowed the Northstars to prevail 7-5.

Newcastle returns home for Australian Ice Hockey League action against Melbourne at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium, Warners Bay, from 5.30pm on Saturday 2 July.
