Wallsend is set to be overrun by ‘wyld’ creatures next week.
Giant puppets, roving artists, workshops, a lantern parade and a hunt for Wyldings are just a few of the activities expected to transform the Newcastle suburb into an urban playground.
Wallsend Wyldings is a free, week-long, family-friendly event that kicks off on Monday 22 November and culminates in a dinner in the park on Friday 26 November.
Wyldings have been let loose on the township of Wallsend, with children encouraged to hunt for them using a map collected at the Wallsend Library.
The adventure will take them through the main streets, drawing attention from some friendly creatures along the way.
The creatures are the handiwork of Curious Legends, a puppeteer group based in Hamilton.
Curious Legends artistic director Mitchell Reese says families attending Wallsend Wyldings can expect the unexpected.
“This is going to be a fun week for families in Wallsend,” he said.
“Our Bush Clowns will be roaming the streets, as well as a heap of great roving artists from around Newcastle each afternoon.”
The Hunt is on from Monday 22 to Thursday 26 November.
The Wyldings dinner on Friday 26 November will take place at the Wallsend Park on Cowper Street from 5pm to 8pm.
Families are encouraged to dress up as their own fierce Wylding to join the Wyldings parade through the trees, as well as joining in the craft activities, music and roving entertainment.
Wallsend Wyldings is funded by the City of Newcastle’s SBR Program, and supported by Newy with Kids, WOW Wallsend and Wallsend Village.
