SHARE

Three people were rushed to John Hunter Hospital this evening after a single vehicle collided with a train at Wallarobba, south of Dungog.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) was tasked by NSW Ambulance to the location just before 5pm on Tuesday 22 June.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District, Fire and Rescue NSW, the NSW Rural Fire Service and Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) inspectors were also in attendance.

It is understood the passenger train and Toyota Tarago collided at a rural rail crossing.

All three occupants of the vehicle suffered serious injuries.

“It was a terrible scene,” a WRHS spokesperson said.

“Local paramedics and emergency services started treatment on the people.

“Our chopper and Critical Care Medical Team arrived shortly after and assisted them.

“Two occupants, one male and one female both aged 65, were treated and stabilised prior to being flown directly to the John Hunter Hospital.

“They were in a serious condition, sustaining multiple traumatic injuries.

“A second Critical Care Medical Team was also tasked to the location, this time from Sydney.

“They treated and stabilised the third occupant of the vehicle, also aged in their 60s, before being flown to the John Hunter Hospital.

“Again, they suffered multiple traumatic injuries.”

No further details are available; however, an investigation will take place to determine the cause of the accident.
