Support hub for people with disability

SHARE

Social distancing is not an option for people with disability.

That’s the verdict from Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) Executive Officer, David Belcher.

He says many in the disability community cannot live safely in their homes without direct, practical support from other people.

However, members of CDAH – an independent, collective voice committed to full inclusion and active citizenship – have contacted the organisation looking for help after their support workers cancelled crucial shifts.

These shifts include assistance to get in and out of bed, go to the bathroom, shower and dress, eat meals, and take medications.

“COVID-19 is creating instability in the workforce of disability support workers,” Mr Belcher says.

“We need to ensure that people with disability get the essential supports they need at home, and we need to coordinate this locally.

“Social distancing is not an option – it actually places our community at a very real risk.”

In response to the cancellations, CDAH has set up Hunter Supports Hub – a local, grassroots coordination service.

As the virus spreads, the hub will aim to quickly connect people who can provide support with those who need it most.

Mr Belcher says CDAH has been communicating with people with disability, as well as support workers and service providers, who recognise how vital it is to work together as part of a coordinated approach.

“We are collaborating with local service providers, who have put into place ways to support people regardless of symptoms or a positive COVID-19 test result,” he says.

“The Hunter community is known for its goodwill, generosity and great problem-solving, so we know we can work together to support people who need it during this pandemic.”

CDAH encourages people with disability who are in need of essential supports to get in contact by visiting the Hunter Supports Hub.

Service providers and support workers who are keen to collaborate are also encouraged to get in contact with CDAH via the website.
