Search underway for missing rock fisher in Port Stephens

SHARE

A multi-agency operation, including Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) assets, is currently searching for a missing fisher, who’s been swept off the rocks in Port Stephens.

As hazardous surf conditions continue to wreak havoc across the NSW coastline, lifesavers were expecting a busy day.

And, it began early on Saturday 3 February.

Just after 9am, the SLSNSW State Operations Centre was alerted to an incident unfolding near Fingal Bay.

Local police confirmed a man in his 60s, of a culturally and linguistically-diverse background, had gone underwater and not been seen since.

He was one of four people to be rock fishing in the area, with the other three also coming into trouble.

Thankfully, they managed to return to the rocks.

Fingal Bay SLSC’s Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB), as well as other resources, were then tasked to the job and are currently assisting in the search efforts.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) also winched a doctor down to treat the three men on the rocks, with one suffering from head and neck injuries.

Since 1 December, there have been 11 coastal drownings in NSW.
