Officer injured during arrest of man over sexual touching claims

A female police officer suffered injuries while trying to arrest a man for sexual touching at Lake Macquarie on Friday.

Twenty-four hours earlier, detectives from Lake Macquarie Police District were contacted in relation to an incident, which occurred in the Redhead area.

It’s understood a 23-year-old woman claimed she had been sexually touched by an anonymous male.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives identified and located the 31-year-old man on Flowers Drive, Catherine Hill Bay, about 3.40pm on 20 October.

It is alleged he then rammed a police vehicle, causing significant damage to the rear of the unmarked car, and injuring a Senior Constable in the process.

The man attempted to car jack another vehicle before being arrested.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with two counts of sexually touch another person without consent, common assault, predatory driving, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, and assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Saturday 21 October.
