Hunter youngsters primed for region’s biggest career expo

Are you still undecided about what profession you’d like to pursue after your senior education winds up?

If the answer is “yes”, you need to attend the region’s largest exhibition, the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Career Expo, at the Newcastle Racecourse this week.

From 9am until 3pm on Thursday 16 May, Career Links will host the annual event, which attracts exhibitors focused on providing information to students about opportunities, training and tertiary schooling.

Almost 4,500 pupils are booked to attend this year with their career advisors, from as far away as Tuncurry in the north, Gosford in the south and Maitland in the west.

Career Links CEO John Purcell is passionate about connecting young people with the education, industry and opportunities that will help guide them to a bright future.

“We have a mission to assist students in the next stage of their lives,” he said.

“With more than 140 exhibitors representing interstate universities and colleges, further education support organisations, employers, government services and vocational training providers, there is something here for every pupil.”

Mr Purcell admitted the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Career Expo was their flagship event since 2009.

“It’s critical for senior high school students,” he said.

“It is an opportunity to gain insight into the realm of further education, training and the skills sets required by industry as part of their career journey.

“It can be an inspirational experience for some pupils who may have their eyes opened to opportunities that they didn’t dare dream of before.

“Students should come to the expo prepared to ask questions, to seek out the possibilities and to be open to new information.

“It’s a fact-finding mission.

“They can have one-on-one discussions with employers, trainers and university staff, take away the handouts that many exhibitors provide and really gain an insight into their next steps.”

There will also be several outdoor exhibits, featuring the NSW Police Force, NSW Ambulance and the Australian Defence Force.

Entry to the event, open to the public, is $5 per person at the gate.
