Frugal Newcastle dad helping shoppers save with Grocerize

SHARE

A Newcastle dad is creating a stir in shopping aisles after creating a website he says can save families up to 28% on their grocery bill.

Blake Bennett is the brainchild behind Grocerize.

And, the father-of-three’s quickly gaining a reputation as a household budget guru after creating a way to compare the prices of groceries at big name stores, plan a shop, and get sale alerts.

He is also using the website to share his top money-saving techniques.

Grocerize is the brainchild of Newcastle dad Blake Bennett.

Blake says he was in the nappy aisle at his local grocery store in Charlestown when he first had the lightbulb moment that he admits has become an obsession.

“Grocery prices in Australia are surging and Aussie families are feeling the pinch,” he says.

“As a dad shopping for my family, I noticed significant price changes weekly between Coles and Woolies.

“After realising how much I could save, I got a bit carried away with comparing prices.

“I thought it would be really useful to automate the comparisons – and that’s how Grocerize came to be.

“I wanted to create something free and simple for people to use.”

Using his background in digital development, Blake created Grocerize.com.au

The website works by comparing the prices of grocery items at Coles and Woolworths, creating and storing shopping lists, and alerting shoppers when preferred items are reduced in price.

“Just add your groceries and see who’s the cheapest instantly,” he says.

“You literally start your shop at Grocerize. Users can create a shopping list for in-store use or push it directly to Coles and Woolworths websites for convenient delivery.

“It can make huge time and money savings for your household every time you shop.”

Blake is keen to share many cost-saving ideas he has learned with fellow shoppers, too.

“Stock up on non-perishables when they’re half price, and for essentials like dishwashing tablets, coffee, and nappies, never pay full price – wait for the discounts. Often, you can snag them at 50% off if you time it right. That can equate to around $20 in savings for just one item.”

Fast facts:

Online grocery shopping is booming, with 48% of Australians participating and 15% making the switch to ordering most, or all, of their groceries online.

Blake’s Expert Tips for Saving on Groceries:

  • Do Your Research: On average, around 2,800 products are half-price or reduced between Woolworths and Coles every week (almost 1/3 of all items). Set price alerts on Grocerize so you know when items are on special.
  • When non-perishables are half-price, stock up. Tuna is often half price.
  • Identify products with significant savings potential that should never be bought at full price, such as dishwasher tablets, coffee, and nappies.
  • Consider a Second Freezer: Frozen items are often half price (e.g. pies, fish), and it’s cheaper to stock up and buy a freezer.
  • Join Grocerize and create multiple lists: Have lists for different items (e.g. household cleaning, kids’ lunches), and Grocerize will provide the costs of those lists each week as they fluctuate.
