GALLERY: Scorpions tame Lions in Real NRL

SHARE

A gallant South Newcastle Lions was no match for a clinical Macquarie Scorpions outfit in the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) at the weekend.

Before the showdown, both sides paid their respects to Lions stalwart Derek Hunt, who passed away following a 40-plus years’ association with the club, with a minute’s silence.

Then it was all down to business with the hosts prevailing 40-18 in the NSWRL Denton Cup fixture at Lyall Peacock Oval.

The fast-paced nature of the game caught the Scorpions off guard.

However, they still managed to post first points against the run of play through winger Ro Buaserau who raced 65m untouched. Kerrod Holland landed the sideline conversion for a 6-0 lead.

The Lions launched another attacking raid and it soon paid off when a fumble in-goal allowed lock Scott Matthews to ground the loose ball. Jason Keelan quickly levelled it up at 6-all in the 13th minute.

That spurred Macquarie into action with Royce Geoffrey (24th) and winger Joe Woodbury (31st), with one Holland goal, putting the home side ahead 16-6.

A try right on the stroke of half-time, to second-rower Ben Roose, which Holland converted, gave the Scorpions a handy 22-6 margin at the break.

South Newcastle hit back immediately when play resumed with Jake Lawrence diving over. Keelan reduced the advantage to 22-12.

Unfortunately for the Lions, that’s as close as they got to Macquarie.

The Scorpions surged to 40-12, via Andrew Sumner (58th), Fletcher Myers (61st) and Buaserau (66th), with Holland successful with all three shots, before Jacob Afflick crossed in the 74th minute for South Newcastle.

The Lakes United Seagulls caused a boilover at Cahill Oval when they defeated The Entrance Tigers 30-6 on Saturday (13 June).

Matt Cooper opened the scoring in the 19th minute, but the visitors responded through Tim Nawaqatabu, converted by Matthew Killick, to lead 6-4.

From that point, it was all Seagulls.

Toni Mataele (36th), Blake Smith (47th), Oskar Muir (59th), Shaun Boss (66th) and James Johnson (72nd) all added their names to the tryscoring list, while Joel Edwards booted three goals. Discipline went out the window at the end, with Sione Tuitupou-Kutu (Lakes United), Iosua Afoa (The Entrance) and Nawaqatabu each spending time in the sin bin.

The Western Suburbs Rosellas captured their fourth consecutive victory – and a massive scalp – when they upset the Cessnock Goannas 16-10 at Harker Oval.

The sleeping giants of the competition led 6-0 when Malu Fiu dived over the line and Logan Radzievic piloted the ball between the uprights.

With Stephen Widders (Wests) in the sin bin, the Goannas made the most of the overlap and Jayden Young touched down.  Adrian Davis tied things up at 6-all.

Fiu’s second just before the interval, and Radzievic’s conversion, seemed to unsettle Cessnock as they headed to the sheds in front 12-6.

Liam Wiscombe (63rd) then gave the Rosellas some breathing space at 16-6.

And, even though Wyatt Shaw crossed for the Goannas, it was too little, too late for the defending premiers.

Real NRL front-runners Maitland Pickers handed out a league lesson to the Wyong Roos, 48-6, at the Maitland Sportsground.

The fixture was as good as over at half-time, with the Pickers enjoying a comfortable 36-6 advantage.

Maitland piled on eight tries, with Kyle Kingston (6th, 24th) and Pat Mata’utia (30th, 31st) bagging doubles.

Jayden Butterfield (1st), Daniel Langbridge (5th), Chad O’Donnell (74th) and James Bradley (77th) also chipped in.

The goalkicking duties were shared between Brock Lamb (four), O’Donnell (two) and Butterfield.

But, the biggest cheer of the afternoon came when 17-year-old rookie Noah Nailagoliva snapped a shot at goal in the 78th minute.

Earlier in proceedings, the former East Maitland Griffins junior made his debut in the first grade ranks.

Terence Seuseu was the Roos’ lone tryscorer.

In Sunday’s fixture, the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs gave the Central Newcastle Butcher Boys a scare before succumbing 30-22 at St Johns Oval.

The Bulldogs went to the break ahead 16-12, courtesy of Zeb Dunstan (3rd), Henry Penn (21st) and Barry McGrady (29th), plus a couple of conversions to Ethan Niszczot.

The Butcher Boys responded through Randall Briggs (10th) and Kurt Donoghoe (13th), with Jack Kelly landing both shots.

Central Newcastle then stormed to 24-16 via Briggs’ second and another try to Dylan Phythian.

Kurri Kurri, missing suspended captain-coach Mitch Cullen, reduced the margin to 24-22 when Dunstan snared his double.

However, the Butcher Boys put the issue beyond doubt when Cam Anderson scored in the 73rd minute, which was duly converted by Kelly.
