Fishers called to keep Lake Macquarie waters clean

SHARE

Recreational anglers are being called upon to help keep Lake Macquarie’s waters immaculate this weekend.

Through the statewide Keep It Clean initiative, OzFish Unlimited and the NSW Department of Primary Industries hope to see as many local fishers as possible roll up their sleeves on Sunday 21 January.

“No one wants to catch a plastic bag when they’re out on the water,” spokesperson Jonathon Bleakley said.

“We know the impacts litter can have on wildlife and marine life.

“So, programs like this make for a better fishing experience for all involved.”

Volunteers are welcome to meet the “clean-up crew” at the Marks Point boat ramp at 10am.

“Look out for the OzFish signage,” Mr Bleakley said.

“We will supply all the necessary equipment for the clean-up to take place.

“But, we’re encouraging people to bring water and wear sun-safe clothing.

“As well, prizes and giveaways will be up for grabs.”

Mr Bleakley highlighted the importance of Keep It Clean.

“Recreational anglers see the impacts of litter,” he said.

“However, it’s not always their rubbish that we’re cleaning up.

“By getting involved fishos, it’s inspiring others to think local and create change.

“We simply need Lake Macquarie anglers to come down and give a few hours to better the environment.”

The community event is a Yabby Trap Drop Spot, too.

People can bring down their “Opera House” nets, which are now illegal in NSW, to Marks Point and swap it for a free Oar-Gee Plow lure to support sustainable fishing.

Those collected will be recycled into useful fishing products.

Registration is essential for the event.
