What’s On: Seven things to do in the Hunter 23 to 25 Dec

Yes, Christmas is finally here! From us and ours to you and yours – have a safe and wonderful festive season.

Here’s a few ways you can join your community in marking this special time of the year.

A Christmas Play

The Grainery Church presents the return of Good King Wenceslas at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on Friday 23 December. Two sessions, 2pm to 3.30pm and 7pm to 8.30pm, will showcase an original musical based on the story of the much-loved Christmas carol. The 90-minute, ticketed production includes a large cast of local singers, dancers, actors, musicians and technicians. 

A Christmas Delight

It might be your last chance to see homes decked out in Christmas lights, so as soon as dusk is falling be sure to make your way through The 2022 Christmas Lights Trail and bask in the wonder.

A Fresh Bargain

Lake Macquarie City Farmers Market is on at the Glendale Stockland carpark on Saturday 24 December from 7am to 1pm. Set up in its new undercover area, this is your last chance to buy ingredients for your Christmas lunch – fresh and direct from growers.

A Friday Feed

Friday Night Foodies is on at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima) from 5pm to 8pm. This week’s delicacy is Dog House Grill, serving authentic smoked Vienna dogs with local food vans on site together with art and a local wine or beer in an outdoor licensed area. Harry and Lola’s will also be onsite serving drinks and pre-ordered grazing plates.

Friday Foodies, Lake Macquarie

A Crime
The Newcastle True Crime Tour will take visitors on a walk through the dark side on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 December, delving into some unimaginable deeds committed by Novocastrians in the past. The 90-minute tour departs from Enterprise Park, at the corner of Scott Street and Watt Street, costs $34/adult and requires comfortable shoes. 

Friday Chill at Pacific Park Newcastle – supported by Soul Cafe

A Friday in the Park

Its Friday Chill in the city on 23 December when Soul Café hosts its regular picnic in the park from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Pacific Park. The weekly event features local artists performing music, food trucks, and children’s activities in a free family-friendly environment in the heart of the city’s east end. 

A Carol or Two

Guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit, the final few Christmas carols will be held in our region this weekend, including;

  • Christmas Carols at Raymond Terrace Community Church, Saturday 24 December 7pm to 9pm.
  • Family Christmas Carols at St John’s Newcastle, Parry Street Cooks Hill, Saturday 24 December 5.30pm to 7pm.
  • Christmas Eve Carols at All Saints New Anglican Church, Regent Street New Lambton from 5.30pm to 9pm.
  • Christmas Eve Carols at Newcastle Presbyterian Church, Auckland Street Newcastle from 8pm to 9pm.
