SATURDAY 21 January
BUILD: Lake Macquarie Arts, Culture & Tourism is hosting a LEGO play session from 9am to 1pm on Saturday and Sunday at SEEN @Swansea (Pacific Hwy). All ages are welcome, and entry is by gold coin donation. Builds will be shared on an in-house digital display.
SCULPT: Sculptor Steve Machell will be hosting a sand sculpting workshop at Blacksmiths Beach on Saturday from 3pm. Meet at 2.30pm to register for the free event, soak up the learning in a 15-minute workshop then take on others in a sculpting competition from 3.45pm to 5pm, as a team or individual. This is an all-ages, ticketed event. Check the Lake Macquarie City Council website for more details.
GIRLS: The fourth annual Girls Day Out will be held on Saturday at Foreshore Park and Nobbys Beach from 8am to 3pm. Girls aged 5 to 16 can try a new sport by joining a 45-minute mini clinic with some of the best athletes in the business. Come-and-try sessions include surfing, soccer, rugby league, rugby union, netball and AFL. Some of the names not to be missed this weekend include Caitlin Johnston, Lauren Allen, Sam Poolman, Lizzy Montgomery and Phillipa Anderson.
CARS: If you love Supercars, classic cars or modified cars then head down to the V8 Pit Lane on Wharf Road Newcastle from 9am to 1pm on Saturday. Up to 50 cars are expected to be on display at Newy Supercars first event for 2023.
BBQ: Hunter Events will be launching its epic summer edition with the Bar & BBQ Festival at the Maitland Showground on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. The family-friendly, free-entry event will be showcasing some of the best barbeque drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), food, entertainment and market stalls in the Hunter region, with thrills provided by Aussie FMX Motocross and The Hot Wheels Stunt Team.
SUNDAY 22 January
ART: Miniature installation artist Tinky has specially created a self-directed art trail for all ages at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Escapade will take adventurers along a trail to discover ten of Tinky’s absurd dioramas which encourage experiences with art in unexpected places. The tiny art trail is free and open from 10am to 5pm.
LAGUNA: Take a day trip and discover one of the Hunter’s hidden gems by attending the Laguna Fair on Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Held at the Laguna Community Hall the free event includes roving entertainment, free fairy floss & sno cones, live music, a kids’ disco and carnival games. There will also be local food and drinks available for purchase. Experience a fair dinkum country fair organised by Cessnock City Council and supported by Reconnecting Regional NSW.
