Walka Water Works

  • Maitland
  • Distance: 3.2km (per lap)
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Due to re-open late in November, Walka Water Works is a popular recreation area in the Maitland LGA. And, one of its main features is the 3.2-kilometre walking trail around the lake. It’s suitable for cyclists and prams, too, but use common sense and display courteous behaviour to ensure everyone feels safe. For wildlife enthusiasts, the large lake area is home to more than 140 species of birdlife. Walka Water Works is open daily from 7am to 7pm at the moment; and 7am to 5pm during non-daylight saving time.

Anzac Memorial Walk.

Anzac Memorial Walk

  • Newcastle
  • Distance: 450m or 6km (coastal)
  • Difficulty: Easy

Open 24 hours, and boasting panoramic views, Anzac Memorial Walk is located along the headland between Bar Beach and Strzelecki lookout – and accessible for everyone. The 450m clifftop walkway was opened in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landing in Gallipoli. However, if you’re looking for a greater challenge or feel more energetic, take in the entire stretch of Newcastle’s coastline by tackling the full Bather’s Way from Merewether to Nobbys Beach route. The Anzac Memorial Walk links the 6-kilometre coastal walk.

The Yuelarbah walking track, 10 minutes from the CBD, is set within the Glenrock State Conservation Area.
