Thornton’s $26 million upgrade at the intersection of Raymond Terrace and Government roads has passed a major milestone, with the main stormwater drain completed. 

The project will see a four-way juncture welcomed by the end of 2024, replacing the current three-way crossing. 

Traffic lights will also be built, with both roads widened to allow for two through lanes in each direction and right turn bays. 

This month crews finished installing the 700m drainage line along the northern side of Raymond Terrace Road. 

The next step, says Maitland City Council manager works Ashley Kavanagh, is the northern passage. 

“This new section of road will create a four-way intersection, allowing traffic to flow through the area more easily, and we expect it to open early next year,” he said. 

“We will then begin to widen both Raymond Terrace Road and Government Road into two lanes each way.”  

Work is also continuing along Government Road, with the installation of stormwater drainage nearing completion.   

Changed traffic conditions will remain in place while work occurs.   

“However, crews will do their best to minimise disruptions,” adds Mr Kavanagh. 

“We’re making every effort to maintain two-way travel on Raymond Terrace Road during peak times to minimise disruption to road users.  

“We thank residents and commuters for their patience during this time, as we work hard to deliver critical infrastructure for those living and travelling through Thornton and Chisholm.” 

The project is on track for completion in the third quarter of 2024. 

At least $9.5 million of the funding for the upgrade came via the NSW Government’s Housing Acceleration Fund, while Maitland City Council is subsiding the remainder of the work, primarily through Section 7.11 Developer Contributions, collected from the Thornton North Urban Release Area. 

Raymond Terrace Road is one of the busier thoroughfares in the Maitland LGA, feeding thousands of commuters daily.
