Meet ZEB, Newcastle’s first Zero Emission Bus

Keolis Downer Hunter operator Paul Picton has given the city’s first Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) the “thumbs up”.

The delivery of the vehicle, which made its maiden outing in Newcastle on Monday 2 February, is part of the NSW Government’s initial steps to transition its entire public fleet throughout the state.

And, it won’t be the last ZEB witnessed on local roads either.

Newcastle will welcome another two Zero Emission Buses in the coming months.

Mr Picton said it was great to see new technology hit the city’s transport network.

“Customers will enjoy the difference, in particular a more comfortable ride,” he explained.

ZEB will operate across the Newcastle transport network and be easily identifiable with the exterior displaying the “Breathe easy – This is a zero emissions bus” messaging.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said it was a historic occasion, with Newcastle now being home to the first permanent electric bus in a regional and outer metropolitan area.

“The NSW Government is committed to permanently transitioning its diesel vehicles to zero emission technology and, today, that extends beyond Greater Sydney,” he stated.

“ZEBs will deliver a more sustainable transport option for the local community, reduce emissions and will further encourage people to make the switch to public transport.”

Keolis Downer Hunter general manager Emmanuel Genlot said it was terrific to view zero emission technology in Newcastle.

“You can see ZEB looks very similar to the buses already out there, however customers and the community will notice some differences,” he added.

“They’ll experience a quieter and smoother ride.

“Meanwhile, the community will benefit from reduced noise and better air quality.

“With this electric bus now in service, it will further promote the benefits of public transport and give Novocastrians another reason to leave the car at home and get onboard.”

Liberal candidate for Newcastle Thomas Triebsees also welcomed the latest addition to the fleet.

“Today’s a milestone for Newcastle,” he said.

“This is about the (Dominic) Perrottet Liberal team delivering transport services to the community in a clean and sustainable way.

“These continual investments in Newcastle are only possible from the government’s strong economic record and plan for the future.”
