The Hunter New England Local Health District’s (HNELHD) rollercoaster journey with COVID-19 has continued today with 13 fresh infections.

It comes after the region recorded a high yesterday with 30 cases detected in the 24 hours to 8pm on Friday night.

Of today’s cases, the Newcastle LGA discovered the highest number of infections with four in Maryville, two in Merewether and one in each of the following suburbs; Newcastle East, New Lambton and Tarro.

Dora Creek, Mount Hutton and West Wallsend detected cases, adding three to Lake Macquarie’s total while Maitland registered just one in Metford.

Of the new additions seven are linked, four are unlinked and two are still under investigation. At least nine were infectious in the community.

There are currently 267 active cases in the district with 17 requiring care in hospital, two are in ICU. More than 570 close contacts are in isolation.

It comes as NSW reported 1,083 locally acquired infections and 13 more deaths overnight.

Tragically the deaths include one person in their 40s, two people in their 50s, two people in their 60s, five people in their 70s, and three people in their 80s.

Nine people were not vaccinated, two people had received one dose and two people – a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s, both with underlying health conditions – had received two doses.

If you need to get tested for COVID-19 there are more than 410 clinics open across NSW.
