Honeysuckle home to more ‘green space’

SHARE

Honeysuckle is now home to more “green space” for locals and visitors alike to gather, relax and play in Newcastle.

Work recently finished on the new public park in the precinct’s west.

It features green lawns, bluestone paving, native trees, a picnic table, seating and lighting… meaning it’s perfect for a family outing or a lunch-time break.

The architecturally-designed 1000m2 space is located between Cottage Creek and the newly-opened Little National Hotel on the southern side of Honeysuckle Drive.

The project, delivered by the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC), was part of the NSW Government’s ongoing $55 million investment into public infrastructure throughout the borough.

“Public spaces such as this play an important role in a dynamic mixed precinct like Honeysuckle,” chief executive Valentina Misevska said.

“The Newcastle community loves being close to the water.

“So, we’re delighted to open this public space on the banks of a rejuvenated Cottage Creek just a stone’s throw from the harbour.

“It also creates a new destination for the hundreds of new residents and workers in Honeysuckle, as well as guests of the Little National Hotel, right next door.”

The latest work follows the completion of another public space and a cultural artwork delivered by HCCDC nearby on the northern side of Honeysuckle Drive.

“That blends seamlessly with this space to create a green corridor that runs along the bank of Cottage Creek and links with the 11km waterfront promenade,” Ms Misevska said.

“Cottage Creek has also undergone recent naturalisation, with HCCDC and Hunter Water landscaping the banks of the creek and creating new sea life habitats along the walls.”
