Five teens, aged between 13 and 17, have been charged following a police pursuit through Newcastle on Saturday.
About 3.30am on 7 October, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District were patrolling the Mayfield area when they attempted to stop a Toyota SUV travelling on Maitland Road, due to the driver’s manner of driving.
However, the vehicle continued its journey, initiating a chase.
The car then travelled through local streets before it reached Wilsons Road, Windale, where it crashed into the kerb, deflating a tyre.
When the significantly-damaged Toyota stopped in Mayfield West, the driver and four passengers attempted to flee on foot.
All five youths were arrested at the scene and taken to Newcastle and Waratah police stations.
The driver, aged 16, was charged with aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, police pursuit not stop drive dangerously and goods in personal custody suspected being stolen.
A 17-year-old male passenger was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner and face blackened and disguised with intent to commit indictable offence.
Another two boys, aged 13 and 17, and a 16-year-old girl were all charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.
Officers will allege in court the Toyota was stolen following the break-in of a home at Eleebana prior to the police pursuit.
They were all granted strict conditional bail to appear before children’s court, with the girl to appear on Monday 16 October and four boys to appear on Monday 30 October.
