Art Beats celebrating Hunter Street Mall’s enduring spirit

SHARE

An event to celebrate “community resilience” amid the Hunter Street Mall’s transformation is set to kick off from this weekend.

Promising a lively atmosphere filled with music and creativity, Art Beats will take place on Saturdays 23 March and 6 April between 11am and 2pm in the CBD location.

The Newcastle City Business Improvement Association (NCBIA), in conjunction with UP&UP Inspirations, is hosting the two dynamic free events as a testament to the vibrancy and resourcefulness of Hunter Street Mall during its ongoing construction.

Special performances by Newcastle’s best “turntablist” Deejay Mathmatics (23 March) and hip hop artist 3Degrees (6 April) are planned, too.

“Art Beats aims to communicate that the area is still open for business, highlighting the fantastic cafes, clothing shops and retail outlets that contribute to the area’s uniqueness,” NCBIA chair Kendall Brooks said.

“We would love to see the community in Newcastle come out and enjoy this two-day activation.

“But, most importantly, revisit the Hunter Street Mall to show their support for the enterprises during the major transformation of the area.”

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of music and art with DJs, MCs and “live” performances by talented local artists.

Or, express your creativity in an interactive graffiti art session or enter the “mini-masterpiece” Posca Art competition, where one lucky winner’s design will be featured on custom-printed T-shirts and stickers.

UP&UP’s Faith Curtis is encouraging everyone to attend either of the days… or both.

“Art Beats will be youth-friendly, family-friendly and dog-friendly,” she said.

“So, come to the Mall and join us for a celebration of local talent and community togetherness.”

Visitors to the events have the chance to take part in the Graffiti Art Wall as well.

You can channel your inner artist and try your hand at aerosol art.

Also, watch artists Jess from Dhiiyan Art and Rach from Rachel Gunns Tattoo paint “live”.
