Your guide to Lake Mac STEAM Week 2023

Dates: 12- 20 August 2023 

Lake Macquarie will be home to a week-long program of inspiring learning experiences that are centred around Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM) held in conjunction with National Science Week. 

The theme for National Science Week in 2023 is Innovation: Powering Future Industries.  

The theme will incorporate the advancement in technology in all industries, especially using artificial intelligence (AI). 

Friday 11 August Look to the Stars. Newcastle Astronomical Society will be hosting a free, all-ages stargazing evening from 6pm to 8.30pm at the waterfront of Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, Speers Point Park. Learn how to navigate your way to the Milky Way and beyond, as the Society’s members share their love, enthusiasm and knowledge of all things stars and the universe. Torches are recommended. 

Saturday 12 August – Superstars of STEAM: advances in astronomy and nano-technology, Sugar Valley Library Museum, kirantakamyari, 10.30am to noon. Join radio astronomer Dr Laura Driessen, and Theoretical Physicist Karen Livesey, as they discuss their passion for science and share what can be learned from studying the sky. 

Saturday 12 August – STEAM Week Crafternoon: balloon powered cars, Sugar Valley Library Museum, kirantakamyari, noon to 1pm. Children aged 4 to 12 are invited to make and decorate their own balloon-powered car from recycled materials to observe science in action.  

Sunday 13 August – Art and Science: creative experiments for the whole family at MAC, yapang from 10am to noon. Young children and their families are invited to enjoy simple art and science activities, including the magic milk experiment and paper marbling, each activity is guided by art educators. 

Monday 14 August – STEAM Week Storytime & Craft for children aged 3 to 6 will be held at Toronto Library, tirrabiyangba, from 11am to 11.45am. Bookings essential. 

Monday 14 August – FILM: Warners Bay Theatre, baramayiba will be screening Christopher Nolan’s 2014 science-fiction epic Interstellar as part of STEAM Week 2023. Renowned for its scientific accuracy and intense plot of exploration and discovery, this is perfect for any fans of space to watch a beloved classic on a big screen. Snack bar and drinks will be available for purchase. Entry is by gold coin donation. 

Monday 14 August – STEAM Week Draw up. This free, after-school maker creator club will host creative activities suitable for ages 7 to 12 at Wangi Library Creative Hub, wanji wanji from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. 

Lake Mac STEAM Week 2023

Tuesday 15 August – STEAM Week Read and Rhyme: It’s Numbers Time. Move and groove with stories, songs and musical instruments at Speers Point Library, milyaba & Morisset Library, bawarramalang from 11am to 11.30am. Suitable for ages 1 to 3. Bookings essential.  

Wednesday 16 August – STEAM Week Read and Rhyme: It’s Numbers Time. Move and groove with stories, songs and musical instruments at Swansea Library, kariyawangba, Sugar Valley Library Museum, kirantakamyari & Toronto Library, tirrabiyangba from 11am to 11.30am. Suitable for ages 1 to 3. Bookings essential. 

Wednesday 16 August – Schools Innovation Challenge. Teams of six students in Years 9 and 10 from six schools will spend the day at the Lake Mac Libraries FABLAB for a day of supercharged STEAM week fun, learning, creation, and inspiration. Students will be competing in a Protothon Challenge, exploring and creating in the Fab Lab, as well as hearing lightning talks from keynote speakers in the Innovation and STEM industry. Swansea Centre from 9am. 

Wednesday 16 August – STEAM Week: Indigenous Science Film. From 10am to 11:30am at Charlestown Library, walyamayi.  Hear how Indigenous knowledge is informing our understanding of fire management and the practices and management of natural systems. Join Indigenous knowledge holders, researchers, innovators and industry experts to explore the power of shared ideas in a screening of The Many Facets of Fire from the Looking back, moving forward speaker series presented by the Australian Academy of Science. Hear from Mr Dean Yibarbuk and Dr Jeremy Russell-Smith as they discuss fire from a range of perspectives. 

Wednesday 16 August – Steam Week Lego Mindstorm – Robotics Workshop. Join an interactive STEAM week special workshop featuring Lego Mindstorm robots. Complete different challenges each week while learning to build and code. This program is suitable for beginners and intermediate coders, aged 12-18. From 4pm to 5pm at Charlestown Library, walyamayi. 

Thursday 17 August – STEAM Week Storytime & Craft: Fun with Numbers at Wangi Library Creative Hub, wanji wanji from 10.30am to 11.15am. 

Thursday 17 August – Big Bang Theory Trivia Night. Get your geek on for Big Bang Theory Trivia themed Trivia Night for STEAM week. BYO snacks. Suitable for ages 16 years+. At Warners Bay Theatre, baramayiba from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. 

Saturday 19 August – Full STEAM – Science week fun. Celebrate STEAM week with hands-on science workshops and activities at SEEN@Swansea. Wheelie Things from 10.30am to 11.30am and Carbon Dioxide Fun from noon to 1pm.
