You don’t really know someone until you travel with them

Is the old saying true? You don’t really know someone until you travel with them.

We’re sure many of you (like us) have been in that situation, on a holiday where you excitedly made plans with friends to travel together and have a fantastic time only to find that you and your friends were not that compatible as travel buddies.

It can start with the anticipation of a well -deserved sleep in when someone set their alarm for an early morning jog on the beach or a yoga class by the pool before breakfast.

Or maybe it’s a case of the “what do you want to do today? I don’t know, what do you want to do today?”, leading to a stalemate where no one does anything.

Over time we’ve found that having those discussions (over a few drinks) as part of the planning process, leads to a more compatible holiday with friends.

Being honest but also casual about what type of experience you are hoping to get from your holiday can help set the tone before you get away, ensuring you are still friends when you get back.

The worst thing you can do is find yourself on someone else’s holiday.

One thing that has worked well for us when travelling with friends is arranging to meet at breakfast (at a reasonable time!) to plan what we are wanting to do that day.

If your plans align then spend the day together; if they don’t then make plans to catch up later for drinks or dinner to share what you’ve been up to.

After all, being on holidays together doesn’t mean you need to be joined at the hip.

The worst thing you can do is find yourself on someone else’s holiday, tagging along finding that you’re doing a lot of compromising and miss out to doing things you may have planned to do.

If you can get the balance right, you can end up having the most amazing holiday together.

So, if you are thinking of holidaying with friends make sure you think about having a shared idea of your holiday style and whether you are compatible travelling together before you even leave home.
